Ground Beetle

Shiny black ground beetle crawling across rough, dry sandy soil

Quick Ground Beetle ID Summary

Ground beetles are dark brown to black, shiny beetles with a long, narrow body that move very fast (they usually run because most species are poor fliers). Here in Central Virginia, you’ll often spot them at night near lights on patios, in garages, basements, or near doors—especially after rain. They usually wander inside by accident and are not wood-destroying beetles. They also don’t pose a significant danger to humans.

Introduction To Ground Beetles

Ground beetles are found all over the state of Virginia. You will see them on farms, in gardens, forests, in buildings, and fields.

These beetles are usually dark colored, but some can be shiny and metallic looking.

Ground beetles are nocturnal and considered good for the environment as they feed on other insects.

Usually, you will find them outside under logs, stones, decaying vegetation, and soil. But, occasionally they venture indoors, especially after rain storms.

On this page, we will provide  more information on Ground Beetle habitat, behavior, dangers, and ways you can control their population around your home.

Ground Beetle Habitat

Ground beetles thrive in a variety of habitats throughout Central, VA, yet they prefer to hide during the day under soil, rocks, vegetation, and mulch.

Their versatility means you’ll find them in forests, yards, fields, gardens, and on farms. In residential areas, they can be found around foundations, in flower beds and gardens, and under woodpiles. As nocturnal insects, they come out from their hiding spaces at night to hunt and mate.

Ground beetles typically remain outdoors, but may enter your home through cracks and gaps in search of food and shelter, especially after storms and when they are looking for food.

Ground Beetle Lifecycle And Behavior

Ground Beetles go through a complete metamorphosis cycle that includes the following stages: egg, larval, pupal, adult.

Most species of ground beetle are carnivorous and considered good for the environment (as previously mentioned). They feed on caterpillars, maggots, snails, worms, and other soft-bodied insects. Very few eat plants.

Many species will spend winter outside and in a protected site (under soil, vegetation, etc.). But, will try to find shelter inside when the weather starts to warm.

Ground beetles are attracted to light. This is why you see them at night near the lights on your home and other structures, and is usually what guides them into houses and other buildings.

Controlling Ground Beetles: DIY Pest Control

Ground Beetles do not damage structures or objects in a house. Nor do they reproduce indoors. They also pose no direct threat to humans or pets. Larger species may pinch you with their jaws if handled roughly. But, this is rare.

Some ground beetles can release a foul odor if they feel threatened, but again only a small number of species perform this behavior.

Here are some ways you can control the ground beetle population and keep them out of your home.

  • Check and seal any gaps in windows and doors, foundation, or where pipes enter your home.
  • Ensure window screens are tight and not in need of repairs.
  • Turn off porch lights when not needed.
  • Remove mulch, overgrown weeds, and dead vegetation from the foundation.
  • Make sure firewood and other places beetles can use to shelter are not next to the side of your house.

Ground beetles aren’t a threat, but we understand it’s unsightly to have them coming into your home. If you are seeing an abundance of them inside, we recommend calling your local pest control service.
