Thief Ants In Virginia

Thief Ants

Common Features

Introduction to Thief Ant Behavior and Habitat

Thief Ants are found throughout the eastern and central United States, including Virginia. They have smaller colonies than other ants in Virginia and may have one or more queens. Yet, most of the colony is made up of worker ants because of their smaller size. Thief ants get their name because the worker ants have a peculiar behavior. They go out and steal food from other ant colonies nearby. Sometimes they will dig tunnels to escape the other ants, or take over another nest.

These ants do not only steal from other ant colonies. They will also steal from you. Thief Ants are also known as grease ants, and will feed on potato chips and other greasy foods. When they are foraging, you will easily find them coming in through cracks and crevices in your kitchen where they can easily reach the pantry. To get into your home, Thief Ants will come in through electrical wires and outlets, which oftentimes makes people confuse them with Pharaoh Ants.

Thief Ant Dangers And Damage

Thief ants can bite but rarely bite people, and their nests can be difficult to locate. The danger they pose is through contamination. Thief Ants can easily access stored foods thanks to their small size, and they carry multiple diseases, which they pick up by feeding on dead rodents and insects outdoors. Because Thief Ants are hard to remove and can contaminate food, it’s best to call a pest control professional if you suspect Thief Ants coming into your house.
