Quick Yellowjacket ID Summary
Yellowjackets are small, smooth-bodied black-and-yellow wasps, that are often seen around trash cans, outdoor food, and sugary drinks, especially in late summer and early fall. In Central Virginia, you can identify them by their nests: many build papery nests underground (old rodent holes, lawn edges) or inside wall voids/attics, and they can become very aggressive if you get too close or disturb their home.
